Personal and Family Update
Where do you currently live? Glendale, Arizona
How long have you lived there? We have lived in the Phoenix area for 30 years!
Name the places you have lived: Waterloo, Iowa City and the Phoenix area
Are You Married? Yes
Since? How many years? 1984- 30 years!
Spouse/Significant other's name and occupation? Steve Powers - exhibits and trade shows sales
Do you have children? Names/ages? 4 children: Austen (28), Jordan (25), Collin (24), Megan (19)
Do you have grandchildren? Names/ages? None yet!
What are your parents doing now? My parents still live in my childhood home in Waterloo.
Career Update
What degrees have you obtained? Any other education after graduation? I graduated from U of Iowa in 1984 with BA in Elem Education and from NAU in 1987 with MA in Educational Administration.
Military? Years of Service? None
What was your first paying job after graduation? I worked a little during college and after graduating from Iowa, I got my first teaching job in the Peoria Unified School District (Arizona). I retired in 2013 after almost 30 years of teaching.
Current employer and title:I'm currently teaching part-time at Glendale Community College.
How long have you been in your current position? a little over a year
What did you want to be in high school, and are you now doing it? I remember thinking about being a lawyer- I didn't decide to become a teacher until my sophomore year at Iowa.
What occupation would you choose if money and time were not an issue? I would like to write children's books.
School Memories You Would Like To Share
What was the dumbest thing you did in high school, and did you have fun doing it? I think we did a lot of dumb things - and always had fun!
What was your favorite song in high school? I'll have to think about that a bit.
What is your most vivid memory from your years at school? I don't have any one special memory, but lots of good ones!
Which teacher/s and/or classmates influenced your life and made a lasting impression? Why? I liked Mr. Burkes for Algebra and I remember having a lot of fun with Mr. Gulick in Driver's Ed.
Did you have a best friend in school? My best friends were Julie Jacklin, Leslie Kies, Lisa Efting, Wendy Follette, Sue Ferguson, Pam Ferguson- most of us still keep in touch!
Did you have an arch enemy at school? I remember I didn't like Wendy Tyler (for awhile) because we both liked Dean Sturch!
Who did you go to the prom with? I went with my boyfriend, Jeff Zaputil.
Did you participate in any of the school plays, band, sports' teams? I was on the girls' basketball team (people always laugh when I explain how we played half-court!).
Is there something you wanted to do in high school but never did? Not really.
What would you tell your former high school self? Don't worry what other people think, especially boys, so much!
Who was your favorite teacher? I loved Mr. Tropf at West Junior.
What was your favorite class? probably math.
Where did you usually eat lunch? What was your favorite cafeteria lunch? We usually drove down to Burger King, but I do remember the cafeteria's chili and peanut butter sandwiches were delicious!
Did you have a nickname in high school? I think some of the boys used to call us the "Ice Queens".
Did you have a secret crush on anyone? Hmmmm....
What car did you drive? I drove a 1963 Ford Galaxie (no power steering and the gas gauge didn't work!) and a 1972 Plymouth Gold Duster.
Personal Update
What are your hobbies? What do you end up doing in your spare time? I love to travel and read.
Have you ever been honored for anything? For some reason I was never voted to be "Mother of the Year"! ha!
Any personal experiences you would like to share? I have to save some info for this summer!
What are your plans for the next decade? I would love to travel more and hopefully, one day, my kids will get married and I'll have some grandkids!
What is your favorite quote? Be the change that you wish to see in the world by Mahatma Gandhi.
Who is your favorite musical group? I love Boston.
What is your favorite team? Any team my kids play on.
What was your favorite vacation? Have you traveled overseas? I love to spend time on the beach in Mexico (about 4 hours south of us). I've been very fortunate to travel abroad quite a bit - I'll go anywhere and everywhere!
When I retire I will hopefully travel more. Maybe one day my kids will get married and I'll have some grandkids to spoil!
